| Dog skin allergies |
Allergies on the skin can occur in dogs because of hypersensitivity to any element of their environment. There is no definitive treatment to cure skin allergies but there are some things that you and your veterinarian can you do to reduce its severity. Do not treat your dog without consulting a veterinarian. You want to make sure your dog is treated and handled properly.
Care at home
1. Eliminate or reduce exposure to an allergen in dogs. For example, if your dog is allergic to mushrooms, most likely you have to bring in house mold removal professionals. Dust is a common allergen and can be reduced by sweeping or wiping the goods at home more often.
2. Use an air filter that can filter the dirty air. A filter can help reduce allergens in the air.
3. Groom your dog more often. This includes bathing your dog more frequently to remove allergens that might be stuck in your dog's coat. Frequently check the ears should also be made to keep your dog's ears clean and avoid ear infections.
4. Avoid letting your dog go outside for too long if the skin allergy caused by insect bites. Some dogs have allergic reactions because of the excessive skin hypersensitivity to flea bites, spiders or mosquitoes.
5. Do not feed your dog foods that cause allergic skin. Some dogs have a skin rash caused by hypersensitivity to certain foods. These foods should be avoided unless instructed differently by your veterinarian.
Treatment
1. Talk with your veterinarian about blood or skin tests for allergies. This test can help your veterinarian determine what is causing your dog allergies. This will help the handling and treatment of your dog.
2. Follow the recipe prescribed by a veterinarian.
3. Find info about allergy shots or vaccines. If the allergen is known, you or your veterinarian can give an injection for dogs. Injections called immunotherapy and can be given to dogs to help reduce itching.
